FAQ

What is Block Party San Diego – building a city of neighbors?
We are a non-profit organization operating under a fiscal agent, Pain De Vie. Our mission is to inspire and encourage San Diego residents to take the lead in creating community within their neighborhood block through block party planning and support..

What is a block party?
A block party is a large public party in which many members of a single neighborhood congregate. Some are organized around holidays such as the 4th of July or Labor Day. Others may start because of an issue such as traffic or vandalism affecting the neighborhood.
The name comes from the form of the party, which often involves closing an entire city block to vehicle traffic. Block parties typically involve music, BBQ potlucks, popcorn machines, and inflatable astro jumps.

Why are we throwing a block party?
A block party can be the difference between a collection of families and houses and a community. Neighbors who meet and socialize have fun, they meet interesting people, create business opportunities, allow their kids to play together, and celebrate personal and community events together. Communities are also safer, as community members are more likely to look out for each other and can recognize unwanted visitors. Research has also shown that connections to one’s neighbors can play an important role in physical and mental health. Disputes are also more likely to be resolved in more constructive ways when neighbors form a community bond.

Why are we closing the street and asking residents to move their cars?
We recognize that there is a physical and mental benefit to feeling secure in our homes and our neighborhoods. We are dedicated to supporting efforts to bring neighbors together to enjoy a block free from the usual hazards and distractions of a car-filled street.
